Here we are, two weeks after the 2008 elections, and one can not even turn on the television without hearing about our new 'President Elect' Barack Obama.  No matter where I turn, I hear things such as 'First African American President' and 'Changed the face of this country instantly.'

Let me start with that first comment I mentioned.  'First African American President'.  Now, I may be out of touch somewhat, but the last time I checked, people were fighting so hard to make this a 'colorblind' society.  We say it, but it seems that no one really means it.  In fact, shortly after the results were announced, members of the Obama campaign stated, 'This election was racial in all the ways that mattered'.  Seems to me, getting rid of racism is something only white people have to do.  As far as I am concerned, Barack Obama is nothing more than the 44th President of the U.S.A.  I could not care less what blood he carries, the only thing that concerns me, are the policies he plans to put in effect once inaugurated.  What those policies are, and what I think of them are something for another time and another place.  Suffice it to say, I feel there was no need for anyone to include race as a factor for his victory.

As for the second comment, about changing the face of this country, I have a slight problem with that.  The man has not done anything for this country other than spend millions in campaign money, and yet I have already heard him touted as the second coming of Christ.  In fact, turning on the television yesterday, I was bombarded with a 'Once in a lifetime offer' for a golden 'President Barack Obama' coin.  First off, the man is not President yet, he is the 'President Elect', second off, what are these people going to do if his policies turn out to be no good for our country?  The people of the United states have jumped the gun.  November fourth was not a historic day, it was another election.  The truly historic day will be when we have a president that does not screw some part of this country in some way or another.

So, I ask the people to ease of the 'Obama Fever' and wait to see how he commands this country in January.  I ask the Media, stop saturating our lives with the day to day affairs of the Obama Family, no one cares what restaurant the kids ate at on whatever day, or how expensive their clothes are.  Cover important matters, like the Exit Strategy that has come into effect for Iraq over the last year, and the advances in security that have been made in the Middle East.  At the very least give the world an update on the status of places like Kosovo, who are wel on their ways to becoming countries of their own.  Let Obama be the 44th Leader of the Free World without all these preconceived notions of 'change' and 'history'.  Is it really so hard to let a man be a man without all this hype?

I thank those of you who read this all the way through for hearing my thoughts on recent matters.

Very good points made. Positive racism or negative racism, it still has no place in politics. And Obama still hasn't done anything yet, aside from creating all this excitement and, yes, hope for the future. He hasn't made any physical change to the USA.

But any way you slice it, this election was a historic moment. You can't deny that this election will be mentioned in all accounts of the black rights movement from now on, which in my view makes it historic. ;) Even if Obama ends up hounded out of the White House as Mrs Thatcher was from Downing Street, the fact that he could get this close to the presidency at all says a lot about the campaign against negative racism.

What I've seen a lot of, though, is that many people voted simply because they were afraid to appear racist, and that is not what the Black rights movement was meant to do, it was supposed to make blacks and whites equal in the eyes of everyone, not instill fear into people while hiding behind the all-powerful word of 'racism'.

I think you're taking it from a very white perspective of things just so far as keeping race of out politics. It's a good opinion to have, but you don't know what this has done for the african american community... It's been amazing.

I have a lot of friends who are african american who say that their parent's told them that they could be anything when they grew up, except for two things: Being white, and being president. It breaks a lot of barriers that we still have and really gives a lot of people hope who never thought that they could be represented.

I completely understand your view, and I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just saying that his race has done so much for the country that isn't necessarily unwanted.

see, that's the thing, though, there are still all these percieved barriers. People are still seeing race. Race never entered my mind throughout the election, I made my decision on who to vote for based on policies. That should have been the only factor in this.

Yeah, that's something to be wary of. For myself, I have a perhaps naive view that the existence of positive discrimination is just a natural part of the equality process. First, the discrimination is totally negative; then, the pendulum swings to the other side for a while; and then, over time it begins to settle in the middle.

Hopefully, anyway... :XD:

There still are barriers for people of color, if you get into white privilege there is a lot still out there that needs to be fixed.

It's good that you base your thoughts on political policies though. A lot of people who did vote didn't...
